- DIAL PCP
-
-
- Version 1.1 January 5, 1988
-
-
- INTRODUCTION:
-
-
- DIAL PCP is composed of a series of files written in PROCOMM's Command Script
- Language. It is designed to make the task of logging onto the PC Pursuit
- network and connecting with oftimes busy cities and/or bulletin boards easier
- than doing it from the "@" prompt. It includes the 8 new PC Pursuit citys and
- the new mnemonics which will go into effect on or about 5 January 1988. DIAL
- PCP will continue to call either your city or BBS selections until connected.
- You can also "manually" dial any number either by itself or in conjunction
- with your other selections.
-
-
- INSTALLING DIAL PCP:
-
- There are 37 command files in DIAL PCP plus this document file. You may put
- the command files in any directory in your search path but the preferred
- location is in the same directory that PROCOMM is in. After you have copied
- the files you will need to customize the "SELCITY.CMD" file to your para-
- meters. Using any ASCII editor, load SELCITY.CMD. The first three lines
- are for your modem's baud rate, PC Pursuit user ID and Password respectively.
- You'll see a comment next to each line describing what goes between the
- quotation marks. You will also see that each entry has been preformated for
- you. For example, the line where you are to enter your password looks like
- this:
-
- ASSI S6"XXXX9999" ;PUT YOUR ID HERE
-
- You would enter your ID between the quotes substituting the letters in your
- ID for the Xs and the numbers for the 9s.
-
- Insert either "3", "12", or "24" between the quotes on the first line,
- depending on whether you are using 300, 1200, or 2400 baud, respectively.
-
- Finally, put your password between the quotes on the third line.
-
- ***************************************************************************
- NOTE: Once you have modified the SELCITY.CMD file >>NEVER<< give a copy of
- that file to anyone. If you do, you are giving that person unlimited access
- to your PC Pursuit account. Remember, YOU pay by the hour for calls made
- during peak hours.
- ***************************************************************************
-
- After you have modified the three lines, go to the dialing menu in PROCOMM
- and revise one of the entries to reflect PC Pursuit, the baud rate you are
- using, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity and for command file, enter
- "PCPLOGON".
-
-
- GETTING STARTED:
-
- You start DIAL PCP by selecting whatever entry number you have given it in
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- the PROCOMM dialing directory. After connecting with your local Telnet node,
- the linked command file, PCPLOGON, will execute and connect you with PC
- Pursuit. Once that is done, control will transfer to the SELCITY file. You
- will be presented with a menu of the 33 PC Pursuitable cities plus the option
- of directly connecting to either the PC Pursuit Net Exchange BBS or the
- Portal System.
-
- (If you don't know what PORTAL is, I suggest that you select that option from
- the menu and connect with it. You will be given 15 minutes to look around
- and decide if you want to sign up. At a flat rate of ten dollars a month,
- the value seems to be at least as good as that which PC Pursuit is.)
-
- You may select as many of the options as you like by entering the symbol next
- to the city's name on the dialing line. After completing your selections,
- press return. DIAL PCP will attempt to connect with each city in the menu
- listed order regardless of the order in which you entered the symbols. If
- a connection is made, an "alarm" will sound and control will transfer to the
- connected city's file. If no connection is made before reaching the end of
- the list, DIAL PCP will "recycle" and begin attempting to connect with each
- city again. This will continue until a connection is made. You can abort the
- dialing process by pressing the ESC key. If you wish to resume dialing, you
- can start over by pressing ALT - F5 and choosing "SELCITY" from the command
- menu.
-
- Once connected to a city, you will be given a menu of BBSs which are avail-
- able in that area. As with the city menu, you can select one or more of the
- BBSs and they will be dialed, in turn, until a connection is made. If a
- board is busy, it will be dialed again on the next pass through the dialing
- queue. If a board is not answering a notation to that effect will be placed
- in the directory you are dialing from and that board won't be called again.
- (See CUSTOMIZING DIAL PCP below for a further discussion of this.) In the
- (unlikely) event that every board you attempt to call does not answer, an
- "alarm" will sound and you will be returned to the SELECT CITY menu. Once you
- make a connection and have completed your session with that board press ALT
- F5 and choose the city's command file again. If you wish to continue
- dialing boards in that city, select the boards you wish to call and start
- again. If you wish to return to the SELECT CITY menu, press "Q" and you will
- be returned.
-
-
- "MANUAL" DIALING
-
- Suppose you hear about a new board that you'd like to examine. With DIAL
- PCP you can "manually" dial that number without having to enter it into the
- command files! After you connect with the city the board is in, select "M"
- from the menu. You will then be asked to enter the number to dial immed-
- iately, if you have not selected any other numbers to call, or after all
- other numbers have been attempted if you also included other boards from the
- menu. When prompted, just enter the number in the form "5559999". Do not
- enter the quotes! DIAL PCP will then attempt to connect with that number
- for you.

- CUSTOMIZING DIAL PCP
-
- Nothing in life is static and that certainly applies, only more so, to
- bulletin boards. Over time, old boards die and new ones come along. Boards
- change to reflect the changes in the personality of the SYSOP and its users.
- What this means to you is that the selections on the city menus may or may
- not reflect the boards you would like to participate on. Indeed, several of
- the menus for the "new" PC Pursuit cities are really nothing more than
- "skeletons." The reason for this is that as, of today, PC Pursuit has not
- released a list of exchanges they will support in the new cities. I have
- entered in each menu at least one board located in the city proper, assuming
- that that exchange, at least, will be supported, but...
-
- Therefore, using the same procedure you used to enter your baud, ID and
- PASSWORD to the SELCITY file, you can change the board listings to your pre-
- ference. Please note that you will have to enter the name of the board
- twice: once in the menu itself and once in the dialing portion of the file.
- You need only enter the telephone number once, however. Take a look at the
- file and you should get the idea as to what goes where.
-
- As indicated above, DIAL PCP makes an entry in the directory you are calling
- from. DIAL PCP uses the Racal-Vadic command language which is a superset of
- the Hayes command language. As such, it is a little faster and a lot more
- informative than Hayes. It can tell if a number is either busy or does not
- answer. If busy, the number is called again; if it is not answering a file
- is opened which is named for the board called and that board is not called
- again during the current PC Pursuit session. If you exit DIAL PCP from the
- SELECT CITY menu using the "%" symbol, these files are erased automatically.
- YOU MUST NOT HAVE ANY FILES IN THE DEFAULT DIRECTORY WHICH DO >>NOT<< HAVE A
- FILE EXTENSION OR THEY WILL BE ERASED!!! If this automatic erasure bothers
- you, then you can alter the SELCITY file to remove this command (there is a
- memo next to the command to identify it). However, if you do remove the
- command, make sure to manually remove these files or DIAL PCP will not
- attempt to connect with these boards until you do. Alternatively, you could
- write these files to a ram disk. If you want to modify the files to allow
- this contact me at the numbers given below for instructions.

- WEASEL SECTION
-
- This is the customary section were a person who develops a program attempts
- to limit his or her liability. Given the proliferation of lawyers (was it
- Mark Twain who said that one lawyer would starve in town that would make TWO
- lawyers rich?), I suppose I'd better tell you that I assume no responsibility
- for the use of these programs. They are offered "AS IS" and any risk assoc-
- iated with their use must be assumed by whoever uses them. Each and every
- person, company or other entity, real or imagined, explicitly acknowledges
- that all programs are provided without any warranty of any kind, expressed or
- implied, including but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchant-
- ability and/or fitness for any purpose. Therefore, do not blame me if your
- brand new Cray compatable Supermicro computer goes up in a cloud of smoke
- -- or your dog dies -- upon seeing this program.

- FINANCAL BEGGING
-
- Every person likes to think that the fruits of his or her labor have a value
- to another person. I could tell you about the many hours I have devoted to
- making these (!#@*^&) programs work but I'll pass on that. If you feel that
- DIAL PCP has a value to you, then I would certainly appreciate it if you
- would demonstrate that value by sending whatever donation you see fit to:
